The ALTAML Conference Opened a Discussion on the Responsible Use of Artificial Intelligence in the Judiciary

June 24, 2026, CU Faculty of Law

On 24 June 2026, the ALTAML conference took place at the Faculty of Law of Comenius University Bratislava. The conference was dedicated to the project’s results and to an expert discussion on the opportunities, risks and conditions for the responsible use of artificial intelligence in the judiciary. The event created a platform for connecting the perspectives of public administration, judicial practice and academia.
The conference participants were welcomed by Assoc. Prof. JUDr. Jozef Andraško, PhD., who emphasised the importance of expert discussion on artificial intelligence not only as a technological topic, but also as a fundamental legal and societal challenge. After the opening welcome, the floor was taken by Assoc. Prof. RNDr. JUDr. Pavol Sokol, PhD. et PhD., who introduced the professional framework of the conference and presented its main thematic points of departure.
The ALTAML project and its outputs were then presented by RNDr. Peter Gurský, PhD., associate professor. In his presentation, he outlined the objectives of the project, the results achieved, and the possibilities for their further use in the legal, academic and technological environment. Particular attention was paid to how modern artificial intelligence tools can support work with legal texts, case law and extensive documents.
A key part of the conference was the round table entitled AI in Courts: Decision-Making Support, Education and the Boundaries of Human Control. The discussion focused on practical possibilities for using artificial intelligence in the judiciary, particularly in legal research, work with case law, summarisation of case files, preparation of materials for decision-making, court agenda management, and the education of judges, judicial officers and law students.
The importance of the discussion was underlined by the participation of representatives of three key environments. The perspective of public administration was represented by Assoc. Prof. JUDr. Milan Hodás, PhD., State Secretary of the Ministry of Justice of the Slovak Republic. The perspective of judicial practice was provided by JUDr. Miriam Oswaldová, President of the Bratislava IV Municipal Court. The academic sector was represented by Assoc. Prof. JUDr. Regina Hučková, PhD. (Pavol Jozef Šafárik University in Košice). The discussion was moderated by Assoc. Prof. JUDr. Matúš Mesarčík, PhD., LL.M. (Faculty of Law, Comenius University Bratislava).
The panellists addressed the question of where the boundary lies between permissible technological support for a judge and impermissible interference with independent decision-making. They also discussed whether artificial intelligence can serve as a tool for searching case law, preparing legal research or summarising case files, and under what conditions its outputs can be trusted.
Particular attention was paid to the risks of generative artificial intelligence. The discussion highlighted issues such as non-transparency, inaccuracies, so-called hallucinations, automation bias and the need to preserve meaningful human control. The participants agreed that artificial intelligence can be a useful tool to support work in the judiciary, but it must not replace independent legal assessment and human responsibility.
Education of lawyers, judges and judicial officers was also an important topic. The development of artificial intelligence is changing the requirements placed on legal professions and creating a need for the systematic development of AI literacy. The ability to critically assess the outputs of AI tools, understand their limits and use them properly is becoming one of the new professional competences of lawyers.
The ALTAML conference confirmed that the discussion on artificial intelligence in the judiciary must be interdisciplinary and practically oriented. The responsible use of AI in the judiciary requires not only technological solutions, but also clear legal rules, ethical standards, education and the consistent preservation of human control over decision-making processes.

Can sparse neural networks finally be fast?

A newly developed software method makes powerful sparse AI models significantly faster and more...

Large language models (LLMs) are incredibly capable, but they demand massive memory and computing power. One common technique to reduce this cost is "pruning" — setting redundant neural network connections to zero. In theory, these "sparse" models should run faster and use less memory. In practice, however, modern GPUs are heavily optimized for dense, regular computations and struggle to process irregular sparse data. As a result, removing half the numbers in a model rarely cuts the processing time in half.
To solve this hardware bottleneck, we developed MACKO-SpMV. Our method introduces a novel way to store sparse matrices, paired with a GPU kernel optimized specifically for Sparse Matrix-Vector Multiplication (SpMV) - the core operation used when LLMs generate text token by token.
Our results prove that unstructured sparsity can finally be a practical advantage. At 50% sparsity, MACKO is the first method that achieves a meaningful 1.2-1.5× speedup and 1.5× memory reduction over standard dense representations.
The implementation is entirely open-source, allowing researchers and developers to reproduce the results and explore future expansions, including lower numerical precision, small-batch matrix multiplication, and wider GPU architecture support.
Because it successfully answers how to make powerful AI models faster on current hardware, the research was selected for the 2026 International Conference on Machine Learning (ICML) in Seoul, South Korea - widely considered one of the top three AI conferences in the world. Furthermore, it was awarded a Spotlight designation, an honor reserved for only the top few percent of submissions. The research was supported by grants APVV-24-0045, VEGA-1/0140/2, and VEGA-1/0538/2, and part of the compute was provided by Devana and Leonardo HPC clusters.
