Comenius University at the QS Higher Ed Summit

In late June, Budapest became the centre of a global discussion on the future of higher education....

The annual gathering of higher education representatives from around the world addressed key topics ranging from how universities can adapt to the emerging Generation Alpha to strategic solutions for the loss of talent from Central and Eastern Europe.
The programme included a panel discussion entitled Starting from Scratch: The Perfect Student Journey, in which participants explored the pressing question of how modern institutions should rethink the entire higher education journey for the emerging Generation Alpha. The panellists – Professor Gurpreet Singh Jagpal of Aston University, Dr Adrienn Dernóczy-Polyák of Széchenyi István University in Hungary and Professor Radomír Masaryk of Comenius University – agreed that universities did not need a revolution, but rather evolutionary steps that would enable them to respond more effectively to present-day needs. Traditional academic structures should be complemented by a more flexible, digitally integrated and individually tailored approach reflecting the needs of a new generation of students. At the same time, universities must preserve what lies at the heart of university education: the principle of reflexivity and continuous two-way feedback.
The main summit was preceded by a satellite event entitled Tomorrow Today in Research, organised by Elsevier. The conference focused specifically on how research institutions can increase their impact and international standing in the age of artificial intelligence.
CU Vice-Rector Radomír Masaryk also delivered an invited presentation at this forum, addressing one of the most pressing problems facing the region: brain drain. In his presentation and the subsequent discussion, he outlined the strategic steps universities must take to retain talent while systematically strengthening their global visibility and reputation within the international academic community.
“Events such as the QS Summit show us that the challenges we face at Comenius University – whether demographic change or young people leaving to pursue opportunities abroad – are part of global trends. If we want to succeed, we must proactively change the way we communicate and build strong international partnerships,” said Vice-Rector Radomír Masaryk, reflecting on the value of the events.

In June, the Faculty of Medicine of Comenius University Bratislava (FMED CU) welcomed three leading...

Armenian higher education is currently undergoing an important transformation as it moves towards international standards and integrated medical teaching. The delegation from Yerevan included Naira Hunanyan and Harutyun Stepanyan from Armenia’s National Centre for Professional Education Quality Assurance Foundation (ANQA), and came to FMED CU in search of practical inspiration for modernising the curriculum in Armenia. During an intensive programme, the visitors toured the Institute of Histology and Embryology, the Institute of Physiology, the Institute of Medical Education and Simulations of FMED CU, and the University Science Park.
“Our expertise so far has focused mainly on tissue-level research. We wanted to move towards the cellular level, and since Professor Varga had published important articles in my field, I contacted him with a view to cooperation. He responded immediately and very helpfully,” explains Dr Naira Hunanyan. “In addition to the science itself, we were able to compare our methods with Slovak simulation centres and modern approaches to teaching assessment. I greatly appreciate the fact that medical education at FMED CU is closely linked with scientific research and that students have the opportunity to develop scientific thinking, rather than just to follow protocols mechanically. We are taking home valuable knowledge about how to build new laboratories and organise teaching more effectively.”
The visiting delegation praised both the technological standard of FMED CU’s facilities, and also the exceptionally warm and supportive environment. “Professor Varga prepared a comprehensive, focused programme for us. He did everything possible to make sure we could try the new cellular research methods ourselves, which is crucial for us. In the laboratories, we learned how to process samples for electron microscopy and immunohistochemistry. Everyone at the faculty was wonderful, patiently showing us everything and offering us their time. We literally felt at home here,” adds Dr Harutyun Stepanyan, noting that the visit laid firm foundations for future joint research projects. Dr Tatevik Piliposyan added that visiting Bratislava as a full team would make it easier for them to implement modern procedures at medical faculties in Armenia after their return.
By strengthening international partnerships with countries which want to align closer with European academic standards, the Faculty of Medicine of Comenius University Bratislava is confirming its position as a respected leader in the region. The Armenian delegation’s visit was organised by Professor Ivan Varga, Vice-Dean of FMED CU and a member of the Institute of Histology and Embryology. “The visit by our colleagues from Armenia was an enriching experience for our faculty and confirmed that the quality of our research and our innovative teaching methods have a strong international impact. Opening the doors of our laboratories and simulation facilities to foreign experts allows us not only to pass on Slovak know-how in places where education reform is under way, but also to open the way to promising international projects. I believe this personal experience will soon lead to official academic cooperation that will benefit both sides, whether in cellular research or in modernising the medical curriculum in line with global standards,” added Professor Varga.

ENLIGHT: A smoother path to a joint PhD

Bratislava, 23 June 2026:Doctoral candidates at Comenius University Bratislava will have easier...

The agreement represents a significant milestone in the development of doctoral education in Europe. It establishes a common framework for the supervision, examination, and defence of doctoral theses among partner universities while substantially reducing the administrative burden associated with creating joint doctoral programmes. As a result, it will be easier to establish joint doctoral study programmes across ENLIGHT universities, providing doctoral candidates with access to international research environments, mobility opportunities, and the possibility of earning a double PhD degree.
On behalf of Comenius University, the development of the agreement was actively supported by Vice-Rector for Research and Doctoral Studies Jozef Masarik, Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Natural Sciences Marianna Kováčová, and Head of the Comenius University Doctoral School Janka Kotullová. Together with colleagues from partner universities, they contributed to the creation of a common framework that respects national legislative requirements while facilitating the establishment of international doctoral study programmes.
“Joint doctoral programmes provide a unique opportunity to connect talented young researchers across Europe. I am pleased that Comenius University actively contributed to the creation of a framework that will significantly facilitate such collaboration,” said Jozef Masarik, Vice-Rector for Research and Doctoral Studies at Comenius University Bratislava.
The Joint PhD Framework Agreement is the result of collaboration among all ten universities within the ENLIGHT alliance and was developed through its Doctoral Network. Its adoption marks an important step towards strengthening European cooperation in research and higher education. At the same time, it aligns with European Union initiatives aimed at promoting mobility, developing joint study programmes, and strengthening the European Education and Research Areas.
The benefits of joint doctoral studies are also reflected in the experience of Veronika Valkovičová, Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Education of Comenius University Bratislava, who completed her PhD through an international joint doctoral programme in cooperation with partner universities abroad. Her experience illustrates the opportunities that similar forms of collaboration can offer future doctoral candidates at Comenius University.
“Thanks to the joint doctoral programme, I gained an opportunity that very few doctoral students in Slovakia have – having two supervisors who guided me throughout my research journey. I published my research in international peer-reviewed journals and took part in workshops and seminars in Antwerp, as well as at Radboud University and Vrije Universiteit Brussel. I also built connections with many early-career and established researchers, with whom I continue to collaborate to this day.I wrote my dissertation in English and defended it in Bratislava. This type of study certainly comes with challenges, such as frequent travel and spending time abroad, but it also offers invaluable new academic perspectives, experiences, and professional connections. The opportunities and relationships I gained through the programme continue to shape and support my academic career in Slovakia to this day,” says Valkovičová.
ENLIGHT brings together ten research-intensive European universities, including Comenius University Bratislava. The alliance aims to strengthen cooperation in education, research, and societal engagement, contributing to the further development of the European Higher Education and Research Areas.

Women in Law tackle period poverty and win award for their work

The Women in Law (Ženy v práve) student association at the Faculty of Law of Comenius University...

“The initial impulse came at the beginning of this academic year, after several of us had completed Erasmus stays abroad,” says Barbora Budzáková, one of the initiative’s founders. The association focuses mainly on supporting and bringing together women in law, networking with women legal professionals, organising educational events, and raising awareness of issues such as violence against women, sexual harassment and period poverty. Budzáková emphasises that the aim is to create a safe and inspiring environment where female students can connect with women working in the field.
From plans to successful events
The association has already begun turning its plans into practice. It has established a book club and held its first event, where members discussed violence against women with Ria Gehrerová, author of the book Bola to láska (It Was Love).
The faculty also hosted the association’s first panel discussion, with Professor Mária Patakyová and Associate Professor Denisa Homola Nevická, whose research focuses on menstrual leave, as guests. Moderated by Dr Mária Havelková, the discussion also looked at the broader challenges faced by women in the legal professions.
The project is also gaining support beyond its home faculty. Members promoted the initiative at Health Day at the invitation of the Faculty of Arts of Comenius University Bratislava. They also presented their activities and aims to the university management and other associations at a convention of the student section of the Academic Senate, which this year focused specifically on student associations.
Access to products and a vision for the future
The founders used financial support from the university to buy period products, which they placed in women’s toilets in the faculty building on Šafárikovo námestie in Bratislava. Educational posters with QR codes for collecting data on period poverty in the academic environment have been placed next to the containers, and the collected data will be used in research.
“Providing these products is common practice at universities abroad, and we would like to introduce this practice here. The purpose is to help prevent the exclusion of female students from classes and to ensure equal access to education,” explains Budzáková.
Recruitment of members in the new academic year
The association currently has around 25 female student members, who continue to bring in new ideas. Its founders have already registered it as a civic association and want to follow up on this official registration with a major recruitment drive for new members at the beginning of the new academic year.
